While I have a ton of stuff I could probably discuss, as I have once again lapsed in regular posting, I choose to focus on one thing this go around, and that’s movies. Even though I spent about an hour in Hastings trying to scrounge up three previewed rentals worth buying, it turns out there is an enormous amount of stuff coming out that I’m looking forward to seeing in the theater.
Last weekend I saw Accepted. I had watched the preview for this movie, and wrote it off as your standard college comedy; worth a few cheap laughs and gimmicky plot lines. I was absolutely right. The thing is, I guess I really sorta like that about that genre of movie. Let’s face it, being of the slightly post-college age, I still get enjoyment out of seeing that kind of cuture glorified and twisted into a completely unreal sense of…well…reality. Van Wilder, Old School (of which Accepted "borrows" a lot from), Road Trip, Dorm Daze, and other movies of this sort have a certain quality, that while they lack any real originality and go for cheap laughs, that’s sort of what makes them worthwhile in their own right.
I still haven’t made it out to see Snakes on a Plane yet. But I will. Not sure when with my busy schedule for the next couple weeks, but dammit, I want to see it. I know what I’m in for, and I know what to expect, and it’s not Oscar performances. How can it be disappointing? So far I have heard only good things, at least from the people I trust on such matters. The ones I haven’t heard good things from, well, I wouldn’t have expected them to like it anyway.
Likewise, I missed The Descent, which garnered surprisingly good reviews for a horror movie, and I haven’t seen and will probably miss Pulse. I like scary movies, especially ones that can get it done right, and so far these look like recent winners. Guess I’ll be snagging DVD’s of them down the road. Hey, I can only afford to go to the movies so often anyway, right?
So, another childhood memory looks prepped for destruction. Warner Bros. is releasing a CGI Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie next year. I am going to try and reserve judgement on this, but I can’t imagine it being done to please me. Then again, I doubt they’re doing it for me, they’re doing it for the 8-10 year olds who don’t even know about the original, live action movie. Granted, after movie #2 (or maybe during it), they sorta started slipping downhill significantly, the original is still a cherished portion of my DVD collection. And you gotta admit, though cheesy, Super Shredder was sorta cool.
Beerfest is out this weekend. I’ll probably find time for it Sunday. If not Sunday, then Monday. If not Monday, then I’ll shoot myself in the face.
Of course, there’s stuff I think I’ve mentioned before, like Ghost Rider, Transformers, Spider Man 3, and A Scanner Darkly that are either a ways out, or not something that’ll be around here.
Saw 3 and The Grudge 2 come out this October, which seems like appropriate timing. The Saw franchise has rapidly turned into a cash cow for Lion’s Gate. And for good reason, because as far as the genre goes, they deliver well. And an interesting point of note, that while White Noise was a crappy "scary" movie, there’s a sequel coming out, with none of the original cast, but starring Nathan Fillion. It’s in post-production with a 2007 release planned, and I’m curious, because I trust ol’ Nate.
Employee of the Month looks like it should be good for a few laughs, in the style of Office Space meets Waiting. Plus with Dane Cook, you just sort of attach certain expectations to it regardless. And Crank might be an unexpectedly good action flick, mostly because Jason Statham is, well, a badass. And I have little clue what exactly this is about per se, but it could be funny as balls (I don’t have HBO, and know who Ali G is only as some kind of TV personality). The Marine could be another movie good for some bang-bang, shoot ‘em up, blow ‘em up scenes. Probably little else though. For us football lovers, Invincible should be a good warm up to NFL season. Children of Men could go either way on the Sci-fi/drama side. Might be neat, might be crap.
On a completely unrelated note, this could be the precursor to something exciting. Or it could just be someone being a fuck head.
