I started playing earthdawn with 1st ed and am currently playing 2nd ed. If you want to use the second step program with 1st ed rules there are two things you will need to check. The first is for multiple disciplines, there is a check box under the options screen for which set of rules to use. The second is somewhat harder to deal with however. Some of the disciplines changed quite a bit between the two editions. You will need to go in and edit the discipline if you want to use it. There is a "Table Editor" which allows this, but it will take some practice getting it right. Keep a copy of the default around so when you mess up you can go back to it and try again.

Thanks for hosting The Second Step, it's pretty hard to find it anywhere else, I don't really know if it's better then EDCG, since I have only used TSS, but I really like the save as HTML function that gets you a nice and compressed character sheet.
